Sardine Can Art

The canned fish industry had a fresh start in 1853. Many factories have opened and operated in Algarve, the majority exporting most of their products.

In the late 1970’s, the industry had a backset, with most of the canneries going out of business, but the industry reinvented itself, and found a place in the delicatessen universe, with many gourmet stores or restaurants using canned fish as their core business.

Catita prints, and the other sea related series explore the fantastic iconography of the thousands and thousands of sardine, tuna, mackerel cans produced throughout XIX and XX centuries.
